Our Company

History

Artistic Achievements

In 1992 the Company found a new home at Dr. Phillips Center for Performing Arts. Over the next ten years Southern Ballet Theatre continued to grow, celebrating its 20th anniversary in the ‘93-‘94 season. In the late 90’s, the Company changed artistic direction under Vasile Petrutiu, and in February of 2000, elevated its artistic standards and vision when the legendary international star and one of the foremost American male dancers of his generation, Fernando Bujones joined the company as Artistic Advisor.

Mr. Bujones brought the Company to a new level of sophistication and high standards of quality. In 2002, the Company became Orlando Ballet with a repertory of more than 30 new works and seven full-length ballets. In 2005, Fernando Bujones sadly passed away and Bruce Marks stepped in as Interim Artistic Director. In the spring of 2006, Mr. Marks accepted a 5-year contract with Orlando Ballet as its Artistic Director.

May we continue to be enriched by this illuminating art form, which in my view is physically the most challenging, sculptural and beautiful way the human body can express itself.” Fernando Bujones (1955 – 2005)
