Career Accomplishments


  • Founding member of Dance/USA; served as chairman from 1990-92.
  • Board Chairman of the American Arts Alliance until 1985.
  • An Artist Fellow of the Aspen Institute the Humanistic Studies.
  • Member of the Inter-Arts Panel of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), Chairman of the International Performing Arts Touring Committee, member of the Dance Panel and Dance Panel Chairman in 1981 and 1993, member of the NEA International Advisory Panel.
  • A pioneer of Boston Ballet’s Center for Dance Education City Dance program, a tuition-free ballet training program for urban public school students.
  • Served as the American judge at the international competitions in Helsinki, Nagoya and Moscow.
  • Served as the American judge at the 1994 Prix de Lausanne.
  • Recipient of the 1995 Capezio Dance Award for achievement in dance and contributions toward public awareness of dance in America.
  • Recipient of the 1997 Dance Magazine Award.
  • Appointed to the US-USSR Commission on Theatre and Dance Studies of the American Council of Learned Societies in 1997, and to the Theatre Union of the USSR for 1988-89.
  • Awarded the Dance/USA honors in 1998.
  • Holds honorary degrees from Northeastern University, Franklin Pierce College, the University of Massachusetts, Wheaton College, and Juilliard.
  • Current Chaiman of the International Jury of the USA International Ballet Competition since 1989 succeeding the late Robert Joffrey.
  • Current Chairman of the Japan International Ballet and Modern Dance Competition.
